Imagination Studio is a co-creation space supporting Lebanese youth from different regions, with different experiences, across different disciplines, and through different networks, to put their heads together and imagine the unimaginable for a more integrated, less divided Lebanon. Collectively, we can transform imagined ideas into tangible projects... Projects that help people like Charbel from Bsharreh and Sahar from Sour, meet one day, study together, work together, become friends, or even fall in love! Our aim is more young people engaging with others outside their social group at school, university, work, home and in the community.

The short film above tells the story of Imagination Studio in 10 minutes. Imagination Studio is part of Joanna Choukeir’s PhD research (in progress) at the University of the Arts London.

The project is based on the concept of co-creation as an approach for social innovation. It brings together over 50 young adults who have been involved in the research over the past four years (as participants, creatives, activists, experts, academics or entrepreneurs), to collectively tackle some of the biggest challenges to social integration in Lebanon.

Following the first Imagination Studio Ideate Workshop held on the 1st of October 2011, five innovative ideas emerged. This online platform aims to support the teams behind the ideas to go through a series of workshops in 2012, to develop and pilot the five ideas:

1. Sect & Marriage: Gharam (find out more, meet the team)

2. Politics & Friendship: Sohbeh (find out more, meet the team)

3. Regions & Mobility: Moushwar (find out more, meet the team)

4. Media & Influence: Khabrieh (find out more, meet the team)

5. Language & Prejudice: Dardasheh (find out more, meet the team)

Imagination Studio hopes to continue beyond 2012 as an online and offline collaborative platform that accommodates and supports new ideas for positive social change in Lebanon.

Imagination Market toured Jbeil and Baakline on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of July, and acted as a testing platform for Imagination Studio ideas. 5 market booths, 5 activities, addressing 5 barriers to social integration in Lebanon. Imaginers described the weekend as: thrilling, touching, satisfying, exhausting, and fun! Youth we interacted with were very engaged. Most wanted to try out all five activities, and took something new away with them about social integration in Lebanon; a question, a different perspective, a message, a story to share with others… This is a selecion of photos to illustrate the energy of the two days.

We would like to thank Aie Serve, and Byblos and Baakline municipalities for all their support.

48 hours of Imagination!

The weekend of the 7th and 8th of July 2012 marks the pilot of five Imagination Studio ideas: غرام، صحبة، مشوار، خبرية، دردشة. The pilot platform is an Imagination Bus, which transports the five ideas to two regions in Lebanon: Jbeil and Baakline. When the bus arrives to its destination, Imaginers set up a pop-up Imagination Market. Each idea has a booth within the market, and invites youth to experience what is it is like to participate in the idea there and then. We are very interested in the feedback that youth give us, and in evaluating the impact that our ideas have on integration behaviours in the areas we’re visiting. This helps us improve and iterate the ideas on a small scale early on, before time and money is invested in implementing them on a large scale and longer term.

The five market booths are:

غرام booth:

Youth passing by come across two decks of cards one of female sects, and the other of male sects. They may choose any combination of cards from each deck, and a fortune teller at the booth will share with them the marriage rights for that particular combination of sects and genders. The information the fortune teller gives is based on accurate laws gained from reviewing policies and interviewing religious leaders and lawyers practicing in family law.

صحبة booth:

A theatre-based peer education flash mob takes place at the booth, where performers representing two unnamed political parties start a scenario that quickly escalates. The scenario pauses, and youth in the audience are invited to participate and re-create the scenario to avoid the clash and conflict. A number of different scenarios are played throughout the day.

مشوار booth:

Youth are asked whether they would like to take us on a walk around their local area, or go for a walk in another region they don’t often visit. If they choose the latter, they are introduced to a host from a nearby region. The host shares a programme he has already prepared for a 30 minute walk around his/her town sharing attractions and points of interest. The bus drives the group of interested youth to the host’s region for the tour and brings them back to the market.

خبرية booth:

A crowd-sourced e-channel goes live for 48 hours only. At the booth, youth are invited to generate video/photo/written/visual content instantly. They are provided with tools and human resources such as cameras, reporters, performers, journalists, to support them in covering their stories. Content is uploaded instantly on the blog and shared via social media platforms. Visit the e-channel and submit your own content here.

دردشة booth:

Youth take part in a karaoke challenge singing tri-lingual translated lyrics of popular songs in English, Arabic and French, to win a Draw me a Song postard!

Anyone is welcome to attend!

Tangible mockups and rehearsals at Prototyping – the fifth Imagination Studio workshop, where teams met in pairs and prototyped the entire user journey of their idea’s market booth. The came up with the seller’s ‘pick-up-lines’, activity dynamics/logistics/props, team roles at the booth, worst-case-scenario considerations, and evaluation plan. Once the market activities were prototyped, teams took turns role playing as youth visiting the booths, testing the ideas, and suggestions iterations based on the experience they had. Thank you nSITE for the creative space and the memories it holds of our very first Imagination Studio Ideation workshop!

Resourceful connections at Asset Mapping – the fourth Imagination Studio workshop, where teams met individually, down-sized their change journey strategies to small ideas for piloting, and pinned down all the assets required to achieve the pilot test: time, tools, information, budget, connections, skills and venue. Among all 17 Imaginers who attended, we were able to identify an access point to every single thing we felt was needed to achieve the pilot in July. What is the pilot? An Imagination Bus which transports an Imagination Market to two regions in Lebanon over the weekend of 7-8 July. Imagination Market features 5 pop-up booths, one for each team, selling their innovative ideas by inviting youth to interact with them there and then! More about Imagination Bus and Market here. Workshop stats: 7.5 hours, 17 Imaginer, 1 bus, 5 market booths, 70 assets mapped, 50 actions, 67.5 MB of Skype data, 5 pilot ideas. Thank you Beirut DC for the beautiful rustic space you offered us for this workshop.

Clever change journeys at Develop – the third Imagination Studio which aimed to help the five teams make their ideas more detailed and tangible, and to build an effective strategy around them. Ideas were developed along a thorough ‘change journey’ to ensure they align with behaviour change goals for more youth to integrate with others outside their social group. The change journey for each idea went through:

- Promote: how do users find out about it

- Incentivise: how do we motivate to get involved

- Sign up: how do they logistically prepare themselves to take part

- Participate: what is it that they are actually getting involved in

- Continue: how do we ensure they continue to engage with the idea or get others to engage too

At the workshop, each team member had a different hat to wear and a different role to play, and together, they complemented one another perfectly:

- The scribe: writes or draws everything and doesn’t miss a thing

- The listener: listens to all to hear the bigger picture and find opportunities or gaps

- The enthusiast: sees the half-full glass and finds a way for every obstacle

- The critic: finds weak points and suggest improvements

- The doer: transforms conceptual ideas into achievable actions

Imaginers would like to thank Aie Serve for offering their wonderful space for the Develop workshop, and for believing in this initiative. The work they do to empower and support social entrepreneurs is truly inspirational! Check them out here.

Photographs were captured by the talented David Habchy. Check out his work here.
